OBESITY- Identify, Evaluate & Treat it

Obesity is a serious health epidemic. About 30 million Indians are obese. It is major risk factor for a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. It was once an issue only in high-income groups, but obesity has now dramatically raised in lower and middle-income groups also.

A crude population measure of obesity is the body mass index (BMI), a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height (in meters). The WHO defines an adult who has a BMI between:

0 > 18.5- Under Weight
18.5 – 24.9- Healthy Weight
25 – 29.9- Over Weight
30 < – Obese

Obesity treatment strategies vary from person to person. Beginning treatment early is an essential part of success, and it is important to talk with your physician before beginning any weight-loss program. There are several methods for treating obesity, such as behavior modification, physical activity, clinical weight management programs, medically managed weight-loss, and surgical treatment.
